The project was started by Malcolm Cameron when he was a senior at School Without Walls in Washington D.C. By the winter of 2006 he had travelled to Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Ecuador and Costa Rica. With the exception of P.R., he noticed that a similarity between the countries was that a high percentage of children went about their daily lives barefoot. Malcolm and his friends owned ample pairs of shoes that often went unused. He decided to begin a campaign of collecting shoes for children who were not as fortunate as he had been growing up in the U.S. Malcolm started by asking for shoe donations at his high school. By the time he graduated in the Spring of 2007, the donations expanded to his family, neighbors and organizations.
Summer of 2007, the organization distributed 3 containers of shoes to children in Haitian bateys in the Dominican Republic. December of the same year, containers will be donated to children in Columbia, South America and in February 2008 shoes will be distributed in orphanages and in the streets of Ismeralda, Ecuador.
When Malcolm left D.C. for school at Temple University in Philadelphia,Pa. his mother Barbara continued his work as Executive Director. With the assistance of Regional Director Ana Joa, and Program Consultant Noel Smith, the work of collecting and distributing shoes to children is ongoing.
